Kayleigh’s charity head shave in memory of late grandmother

Seventeen-year-old Kayleigh Smallcombe, a Human Resources apprentice working for Circadian Trust at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, has shaved her head to raise money for cancer and dementia charities, in memory of her late grandmother, Rose.

Kayleigh decided to take the plunge after experiencing first-hand the pain of losing someone she loved dearly to dementia. Her decision to do this is a poignant one, as at the young age of 13 she was diagnosed with temporary alopecia, a hair-loss condition which dramatically dented her confidence.

Ever since, she has shielded her condition with 18-inch hair extensions.

Kayleigh explains:

“It’s been a huge decision to have my hair shaved off, given that I’ve worked so hard to get over my alopecia, but I know it’s the right thing to do. Strangely, although the alopecia really knocked my confidence and I suffered from low self-esteem, this time the thought of losing my hair is making me feel more confident. If I can do this, I can do anything, and I want to help in any way I can.”

Erica Cross, Kayleigh’s colleague at Circadian Trust, adds:

“It’s such a brave thing for her to do. We’re all really behind Kayleigh and want her to succeed in raising as much money as possible. She’s very young to have experienced such emotional pain, but we all understand that unfortunately she’s not the only one. We’re really proud of her for using her experience in such a positive way, and wish her all the best in reaching her fundraising target.”
