Meadowbrook Primary School in Bradley Stoke has been recognised for its exceptional school sport provision through a Gold Award from the School Games programme. School Games encourages young people by getting them involved with school sport. The Mark Award has been running since 2012 and recognises schools for their commitment to sports in school.
The School Games is all about being the best you can be. To help with this, there are a set of values developed by young people called the Spirit of the Games. These values are self belief, honesty, teamwork, respect, determination and passion.
In order to provide more competitive sporting opportunities, a key focus is to give more young people responsibility within sport. Whether it is as a player, reporter or referee, the School Games provide an excellent opportunity for all young people to make a positive and active contribution to their school. The School Games is open to everyone – whether they see themselves as ‘sporty’ or not.
In term 6, the ‘whole school’ learning arc has been designated “Meadowbrook Athletes’ Village”. This is the final celebration of a year when the school has focused on physical education and personal and social education.
The term began with an inspirational assembly led by the school’s sports coach Debbie Benjamin, followed by two sports days which she organised. Tuesday 14th June saw Doug McLaughlin-Williams from Bristol Flyers come in to work with Year 3. He spoke to classes, emphasising that talent is the result of practice and hard work!
Miss Benjamin commented:
“Pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the huge range of sporting opportunities this year. It confirms our commitment to every child in our care to enjoy a wide range of sport, in teams and as individuals – competitively and for fun! As well as an opportunity for more young people to actively engage in competitive sport, the School Games can provide a catalyst for a wider impact across the curriculum.”
