Woodcraft Folk summer camp 2017

Woodcraft Folk from groups across Bristol on camp in Wales,

An update from Jenny Thompson of Bradley Stoke Woodcraft Folk.

Camping trips are often the highlight of the year for many of our young members and this one was no exception. Fifty campers set off for a week by the sea in Wales. Being close to to sea meant sandcastles, body boarding and exploring the coast.

Back at camp there was plenty to do, with hammocks in the woods for those wanting a bit of quiet time to read, games and a rope swing for those feeling more active. We also had chance to make kites, tie-dye a T-shirt and make some wonderful mirrors decorated with various bits and pieces found on our walks.  As always the bushcraft area was always busy, with green woodworking and fire lighting. Our camp-fires were also a focus for cooking and eating together. Nothing beats a campfire-cooked potato. Yummy!

As the evenings got dark, the fun didn’t stop. We were visited by a local expert who brought special lights along to show us the moths. It was amazing to find out how many different species there were. We were also treated to visits by the local bats and some stayed up hoping to see a few meteors.

It was lovely to see our young leaders in action, many of whom have been members since we first started the group. They took on leading the teams getting all the daily chores done, as well as running games, crafts and even reading bedtime stories to our youngest campers.

Bradley Stoke Woodcraft is open to children aged 6 – 12, we meet on Wednesday evenings during term time.  Each week is a mix of games, crafts and other activities. At least one session each term we head outdoors to explore the local area. We also get together with other groups for our regular fun days and camping trips.

We have places in the group starting in the new term in September. If you are interested in joining or would like to find out more about the group, please contact us on 0117 909 3969, email info@southwestwoodcraft.org.uk, visit our blog or find us on Facebook.
