Bus driver refuses to continue journey

The driver of a bus heading for Bradley Stoke stopped his vehicle at Parkway Station and refused to continue his journey, according to a report in the Bristol Evening Post.

Ten passengers on the last number 73 bus from Bristol City Centre to Patchway (via Bradley Stoke) on Friday night were told to get off the bus and find their own way home.

A spokesman for bus operator First told the Evening Post:

“We are currently investigating the issues surrounding the events of the night of 8th April in relation to service 73 and apologise for any inconvenience and distress caused to our customers on the journey in question.”

Council axes funding for speed cameras

BBC Bristol reports that South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed that it will cease funding for speed cameras in the district from April.

The Council currently contributes £144,842 funding to the West of England Road Safety Partnership, which in turn funds Safecam, the body that operates road safety cameras on its behalf.

A Council spokesman is quoted as saying:

“The council is committed to road safety and the cameras are just one element of a wider strategy.”

“Education, training and road engineering all contribute to making South Gloucestershire’s roads amongst the safest in the country.”

M5 closed tonight for bridge installation

The Highways Agency has announced that the M5 motorway will be closed tonight (Saturday 5th February 2011) in both directions between junctions 17 (Cribbs Causeway) and 18 (Avonmouth).

The closure is necessary to allow contractors to reinstate the Lawrence Weston pedestrian and cyclist bridge, which was demolished on Christmas Day 2009.

The closure of the notorway is scheduled to last from 8pm on Saturday 5th February until approximately 10am on Sunday 6th February.

Diversions via the M4 and M49 will be operation.

Consultation opens on legal notice for Parkway North park and ride

South Gloucestershire Council has opened a public consultation on the statutory notice required to allow off-street parking at a new park and ride facility near Bristol Parkway station.

The car park will comprise 200 spaces and be available between 5:30am and midnight. The maximum stay duration will be 18.5 hours.

There will be a fixed fee for use of the car park of £5 per day, Monday to Friday (inclusive) – reduced to £3 per day on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

The consultation runs until Thursday 11th November 2010.

Work starts on new bus lane near Sainsbury’s

South Gloucestershire Council has begun work to create a new bus lane on a major commuter route between Bradley Stoke and Bristol city centre.

A new bus lane is being added to the southbound carriageway of Great Stoke Way, on the approach to the Abbey Wood roundabout.

The Council says the work should be finished by September and will be phased to avoid busy traffic periods, but adds that “some delays may be experienced”.
