Local runner’s century of half marathons

Posted on Wednesday 30th November 2016 at 6:00 pm by SH (Editor)

Richard Nuell (back row, centre) celebrates with friends from North Bristol Running Group after completing his 100th half marathon. Richard reached his record by completing the Stroud Half Marathon on 23rd October 2016.

Members of Bradley Stoke based North Bristol Running Group (NBRG) have helped celebrate a noteworthy sporting achievement by one of their most enthusiastic supporters.

Richard Nuell takes part in the 2016 Stroud Half Marathon.

Richard Nuell completed his one-hundredth half marathon in a race in Stroud on Sunday 23rd October and members of NBRG were on hand to cheer him along and share a post-race cake.

The lifelong runner is also a member of Portishead Running Club, but says he does most of his training with NBRG as they are such a friendly group and their regular runs are convenient to attend from his home in Horfield.

“My first half marathon was at Tewkesbury in 1988 and I generally do three or four a year. I joined NBRG two years ago and the support we give each other at events and whilst training is brilliant. I’m so grateful that some of my friends from the group turned out for the Stroud race and I was delighted to hear that a number of them got a personal best time there.”

Appropriately, Richard completed the Stroud ‘half’ wearing race number ‘100’, which the organisers had kindly allocated for his special occasion.

‘Couch to 5k’ participants graduate at parkrun

Posted on Friday 8th April 2016 at 7:55 pm by SH (Editor)

Members of North Bristol Running Group join graduates of the group's recent 'Couch to 5k' course at the Little Stoke parkrun on 19th March 2016.

The Little Stoke parkun on 19th March saw a record turnout from members of Bradley Stoke based North Bristol Running Group (NBRG), including many “graduates” from the group’s recent ‘Couch to 5k’ course that had started on 29th January.

‘Couch to 5k’ is a beginners’ programme that the group runs two or three times a year. It involves exercises and short runs to begin with, building up to 5km in just eight weeks.

Writing on the NBRG Facebook page prior to the parkrun, coach Alan Wilcox said: “All the beginners have done such an amazing job – we are all feeling very proud of you all right now. We would like to thank all the leaders/helpers who have helped to make this beginners’ course such a great success. We look forward to seeing all our [now] ‘improvers’ on a Tuesday / Wednesday night.”

NBRG helper Richard Nuell added later: “What a truly wonderful ‘graduation’ for our new runners at Little Stoke this morning. I’ve never known an atmosphere like it, or seen so many lovely smiley faces, in all my years of running and it was a pleasure to be there.”

Course participant Kathryn Harris wrote: “The beginners’ course has been fantastic. Thank you to you ALL for the warm welcome, encouragement and support. I never thought I could run and enjoy it, but I have been proved wrong!”

Another participant, Jo Russell, added: “Thank you so much everyone for all your hard work and encouragement over the last few weeks, I can’t believe I actually did it and I enjoyed it. (Never thought I’d say that about running!) … I look forward to many more runs with the group!”

The next ‘Couch to 5k’ course is expected to start in May or June – keep an eye on the group’s Facebook page for more details.

NBRG’s main runs take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6.30pm, while the ‘school run’ section meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9.15am (term-time only). All runs start from Bradley Stoke Surgery on Brook Way.

‘Running fever’ spreading in Bradley Stoke

Posted on Tuesday 21st July 2015 at 11:05 am by SH (Editor)

Members of North Bristol Running Group prior to the start of the Bradley Stoke 10k Run on Sunday 7th June.

By Moira de Groot of North Bristol Running Group (NBRG).

Thanks to the efforts of Alan and Sheila Wilcox and their band of helpers, ‘running fever’ is spreading around Bradley Stoke at a great pace. A fabulous team of runners, dressed in the new North Bristol Running Group green kit, took part in the Bradley Stoke Festival 10k on Sunday 7th June. Much fun was had before, during and after the run and it was wonderful to see all the participants from the different areas of the running group coming together at this local event.

Although the achievements at the 10k race need much praise and recognition, the main highlight of the weekend was seeing a group of 30 plus beginners taking on the 5k Little Stoke parkrun on Saturday morning. Many of these runners could not even run 50 yards six weeks before they joined the North Bristol Running Group’s Beginners’ Course, but they did it and they did it in style! One runner said: “All the beginners were amazing and I have made some lovely friends. I can’t wait for the next chapter for us all. Feeling proud!” Huge congratulations to every single beginner – it is a marvellous achievement. The beginners now move on to the Improvers’ Group and hope to see more progress.

The next Beginners’ Course will take place in the autumn.

If you would like to start running or get back into running, come along and join this friendly bunch. There is no charge for running with the group – simply arrive at the advertised times and there is sure to be someone who will run with you.

The group meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and the School Run group meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9.15am. All runs start from Bradley Stoke Surgery.

For more information, follow the North Bristol Running Group page on Facebook or contact Alan Wilcox on 07890 182387.

Local group’s ‘couch to 5km’ course attracts more than 50 new runners

Posted on Tuesday 28th April 2015 at 8:17 pm by SH (Editor)

Participants in North Bristol Running Group's 'school run' prepare to set off from Bradley Stoke Surgery.

By Moira de Groot of North Bristol Running Group (NBRG).

What an exciting month April is! The sun is shining, it is lighter and brighter and we are seeing more and more enthusiastic athletes out and about. Some of our runners are training for marathons and other challenges, whilst our first group of Couch to 5km runners (now the Improvers’ Group) are doing very well in reaching their 10km goal – just in time to run the Bradley Stoke 10km in June. The runners joining the School Run are doing parts of the Bradley Stoke 10km route to get used to the challenges they will face.

We are all so impressed with the turnout for the second Couch to 5km group that started in April. An amazing group of 56 new runners arrived for the first session. “I am completely overwhelmed,” said Alan Wilcox. We wish all the new runners the best of luck with their training and look forward to seeing them take part in the Little Stoke parkrun soon.

It can be very hot running at this time of year, so please remember to wear a hat and make sure you have water available, either during your run, or soon after you get back from running. If you can, try and run with company.
