Meet the Sole Sisters

You may have seen us running on the streets of Bradley Stoke and wondered who we are and what we’re about, writes club coach Leona Mills

Sole Sisters is Bristol’s first all women England Athletics affiliated running group and we have over 130 members. We run all over North Bristol using a variety of locations to keep our running routes interesting and varied. Sole Sisters has 15 active coaches taking out different groups on a Monday evening, running between 3 and 6 miles. We are an inclusive running club, we like to chat and we never leave anyone behind – front runners will run back to regroup and there will always be a coach at the back of the pack. The club runs three beginners groups a year that follow a ‘couch to 5K’ format over six weeks with many graduates of the course joining the club as members.

Running has grown in popularity over the last few years and we have really noticed a love of running and racing amongst our Sisters. We regularly have Sisters taking part in parkruns, 10ks and half marathons, as well as a growth in long distance running. In the last four years we have had over 25 Sole Sisters taking part in a variety of marathons at home and abroad as well as six Sisters taking on ultra-marathons this year alone.

This year (2018) has seen the start of the first Sole Sisters league. Twelve local runs have been put on the calendar with Sisters collecting points for taking part, being one of the first three Sisters back or placing in their age category. We have had six league runs so far and over 35 Sole Sisters have taken part – it’s been a great way to take part in some different races and challenge ourselves whilst being part of Team Sole Sisters.

We always welcome new members and would love you to come along and run with us on a Monday evening. You never know, you might catch the running bug and meet a new running ‘bestie’ along the way.

Great demand for BS 10k Run places

Posted on Wednesday 14th March 2018 at 9:55 pm by SH (Editor)

Bradley Stoke 10k Run 2016.

Entries have opened for the 2018 renewal of the Bradley Stoke 10k Run, to be held on Sunday 10th June as part of the town’s community festival. But you’ll need act quickly if you wish to take part, as more than 470 of the 650 places available have already been snapped up.

Organised by local ladies-only running club Sole Sisters, the race starts and finishes at the Jubilee Centre.

The race route takes in much of the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve as well as stretches along Brook Way and Bradley Stoke Way.

As well as supporting the mayor’s charities, Sole Sisters will this year be donating £1 per entry to raise funds for the Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre (BIRU).

Penny Greenwood, Sole Sisters chair, explains:

Dr Bex Mitchell.

“In September 2017 one of our dearest club members Dr Bex Mitchell and her family were involved in a horrific car accident which her partner did not survive. Her two children had extensive internal injuries; thankfully they are now fully recovered and being cared for by close family.”

“Bex herself has a traumatic brain injury. Since November, she has been treated at the BIRU in Frenchay, the unit specialises in the treatment of patients, from 16 years and upwards, who have severe physical and/or cognitive problems resulting from a brain injury. The centre is led by a consultant neuropsychiatrist who is supported by two consultants in rehabilitation medicine and another consultant neuropsychiatrist. They work with a team of psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses and support workers with decades of experience in neuro-rehabilitation.”

Get running with Sole Sisters in the new year!

Posted on Sunday 8th January 2017 at 7:08 pm by SH (Editor)

Members of Sole Sisters Running Club on a Christmas-themed training run.

The Sole Sisters beginners’ course is ideal for any ladies who want to start running, but don’t know how to begin. Three times each year (each course has a limit of 45 people for ‘health & safety’ reasons) we offer a training course for women who wish to start running, have never run before or are returning after a long period of rest/illness/injury.

Please print off and complete our Sole Sisters application form (available on our website) and bring it with you to the first session. Our next course starts on Monday 9th January 2017.

We set a realistic training programme, it’s a gradual build-up of mileage which, at the end of six weeks you will be able to join one of our main groups and hopefully enjoy it with a certain amount of self-satisfaction.

The course costs £15. If you wish to become a full member you can pay the remaining £17 during the six-week course, with this you will receive England Athletics affiliation, an official Sole Sisters running vest and all the benefits the club offers. After this time, membership will be at the standard £32. A £1 subscription will be payable for each night of attendance once the course has finished.

Many of our current members started out on this course and are now running regular 10ks, half marathons and even full marathons, so what we offer is a trusted method.

If you are joining/running/jogging for the first time, no special kit is required, other than a good pair of trainers and a sports bra. Please remember to bring a drink, wear lightweight clothing and remember, on dark evenings, high-visibility clothing is advisable. We do advise that if you continue to jog, a pair of specialised running shoes and a sports bra are essential. If the weather looks as if you may get wet or is very hot, please bring a change of clothing/shoes and possibly a towel for such circumstances.

During the duration of the course, please arrive at the stated venue at 7pm to register and meet the coaches and other beginners. We have a club calendar on our website that lists what venue we are due to meet at. You do not need to pre-register, just turn up on the night.

Any questions before, please email info@solesistersrc.co.uk

Entries have now opened for the 2016 renewal of the Bradley Stoke 10k Run, to be held on Sunday 5th June as part of the town’s Community Festival.

Organised by local ladies-only running club Sole Sisters, the race starts and finishes at the Jubilee Centre in Savages Wood Road, where there will also be free car parking, showers, toilets and refreshments for runners and spectators.

The race route takes in much of the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve as well as stretches along Brook Way and Bradley Stoke Way.

Open to men and women aged 16 and over, this year’s race will have a time limit of 90 minutes.

The entry limit for this year’s race is 650 and places are reported to be going quickly, with 90 entries being made in the first 24 hours after online applications opened on 26th January.

Entry fees are unchanged from 2015 at £13 (affiliated)/£15 (unaffiliated). Online entries attract an additional administration charge of £1.75.

As in previous years, the race will use ‘chip’ timing and all finishers will receive a technical t-shirt and (new for 2016) a medal.

Sole Sisters have chosen the Bradley Stoke Mayor’s charities as this year’s race charity.

To enter, visit the Sole Sisters website at www.solesistersrc.co.uk or pick up an entry form from the Bradley Stoke Town Council office at the Jubilee Centre, Savages Wood Road.
