The Willow Brook Centre has announced the nominations shortlist for the Stars of the Stokes 2018 community awards.

The programme, which recognises individuals who have shown outstanding community engagement and/or achievement of personal goals, is now in its third year. It is sponsored and promoted by a variety of local businesses, led locally by the Bradley Stoke Journal.

Andy Wynn, centre manager at Willow Brook, said:

“We have been delighted with the range of nominations this year, with more than 60 people having been nominated across the eight categories. In some categories we have been overwhelmed by the number and variety of nominations, with one category having more than 20 different people nominated. It has made the judging process harder than ever before, however we now have our shortlist and are in the process of contacting them all to invite them to the awards night at Aztec Hotel and Spa.”

“We are pleased that we are in a position to invite more people than in previous years to join us on 15th June and can’t wait for the awards night.”

The glittering event will be hosted by actor Shaun Williamson, best known for his role as Barry Evans in Eastenders.

More information and updates on this year’s awards can be found by visiting the Stars of the Stokes website, Stars of the Stokes on Facebook or @starsofstokes on Twitter.

Willow Brook Centre has once again launched its popular annual community awards programme, Stars of the Stokes.

2018 is the third year of the awards, which cover Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford, Winterbourne, Patchway, Almondsbury and Frampton Cotterell and comes on the back of increased nominations in 2017.

Willow Brook Centre works with a variety of local businesses to sponsor and promote the awards, led locally by the Bradley Stoke Journal, and the awards night itself is broadcast live on Bradley Stoke Radio. Returning sponsors Olympus Academy Trust, Tesco Extra, Aztec Hotel & Spa and Carisway Facilities Services are joined for 2018 by First Bus and Honeyfield Property Services.

How to nominate

Members of the public are invited to nominate anyone from the local area who they feel deserves recognition for outstanding community engagement and/or achievement of personal goals. Nominations can be made on starsofthestokes.co.uk or by completing the nomination form on page 24 of the Journal magazine (out 3rd March*). The glittering awards night will be hosted by Shaun Williamson at Aztec Hotel & Spa on Friday 15th June. Andy Wynn, manager of Willow Brook Centre, said:

“Willow Brook is at the heart of the community and Stars of the Stokes has become an important part of our annual
calendar. It has been two years since we first launched the awards, and we have been delighted to see them grow each year, with over 300 nominations in the first two years, which has been amazing. We are forever grateful to the many local people who have gone out of their way to help us recognise local heroes.”

“We are delighted to work with our sponsors on this year’s awards, and are looking forward to seeing the nominations start to come in and meeting some more of the leading lights in our community on 15th June.”

Three local business have once again teamed up to launch the Stars of the Stokes awards, a set of community awards for the local area, including Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, Harry Stoke, Stoke Lodge and Winterbourne.

Following a highly successful inaugural year in 2016, the Willow Brook Centre, the Bradley Stoke Journal and the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bristol North are jointly promoting the 2017 renewal of the awards, which will culminate in a glamorous Black Tie dinner and presentation evening at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on Friday 16th June.

Members of the public are being asked to nominate anyone living in the local area who they feel deserves recognition for outstanding community engagement and/or achievement of personal goals.

This year’s award categories are: Star Teacher, Pre-School Carer of the Year, Achievement Against the Odds, Young Hero, Champion Carer, Parent/Guardian in a Million, Coach of the Year, and Unsung Hero.

The eight categories are sponsored by local businesses including the Aztec Hotel, Almondsbury Garden Centre, the Olympus Academy Trust and Dunkley’s Chartered Accountants.

Nominations, which close on Sunday 23rd April, may be made using the form printed on page 24 of the March BSJ magazine [download here] or online via the dedicated Stars of the Stokes website.

Andy Wynn, manager of the Willow Brook Centre, said:

“When we launched the Stars of the Stokes in 2016 we knew that there were a lot of people in the Stokes areas that deserved recognition. However, we were blown away with the success of the awards, with over 90 nominations and 130 people joining us for the awards night. When we sat to review the awards and began to look towards 2017, there was never any doubt that we would repeat the awards. We have been delighted that four of last year’s category sponsors have agreed to work with us again this year. We can’t wait to start seeing the nominations come in and are looking forward to the awards themselves on 16th June.”
