Emily Baker of Bradley Stoke, Bristol

A girl from Bradley Stoke has made it through to the final of a popular Bristol talent contest.

Emily Baker, 11, took part in a heat of Junior Search For a Star 2011 at the Fry Club in Keynsham last Sunday and was selected to progress to the final of the competition on 9th October, when there will be cash prizes of £150, £100, £75 and £50 for the top four.

Emily, who attends St Bede’s Catholic College in Lawrence Weston, was first on stage in her heat but sang really well, says her proud mum Sharon.

The youngster got the crowd going with “Pack Up” by Eliza Doolittle and the Elton John classic “Your Song”.

She told the Bristol Evening Post:

“I love the way when you sing a note you can connect with so many people at the same time.”

“I’d love to be a singer when I’m older.”

Millions see Bradley Stoke Youth FC at Wembley

Bradley Stoke Youth FC advertised at Wembley

Millions of TV viewers around the world watching the 2011 Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday were shown advertisements for a Bradley Stoke football club.

“McDonalds – Supporting Bradley Stoke Youth FC” was the message seen on advertising boards around the pitch during the game between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Martin Lee, of BSYFC, reports that the club badge also appeared on TV adverts during the breaks.

Martin told The Journal:

“I would have never thought I would get the chance to say this but ‘Bradley Stoke Youth FC appear at Wembley in the FA Community Shield, August 2011′. …. Wow! Who would have thought it?”

It is understood that the adverts were a reward for BSYFC winning the GFA Charter Standard Community Club of 2011 award and the club’s partnership with McDonalds.

The match was attended by 77,169 people and finished 3-2 in favour of United.

Jubilee Green play park needs your vote!

Jubilee Green play park, Bradley Stoke

Bradley Stoke’s Jubilee Green play park has been nominated in a competition to find the “best free places to go with the family in South Gloucestershire”.

Readers of the parenting advice website ‘netmums’ are being asked to vote for three of the seven places nominated within South Gloucestershire.

Chair of the Friends of Jubilee Green volunteer group Michelle Dent told The Journal:

“When the park opened I listed it on the ‘places to go’ noticeboard, as parents will travel to get to a good park.”

“Someone in the netmums community has nominated the park as their favourite free place to go (and it wasn’t one of our members).”

“If the park wins in the poll the listing will get upgraded and it will be featured in the netmums e-mail newsletter for South Gloucestershire, further promoting Bradley Stoke as a positive place to live.”

The Bakers Ground play park in Stoke Gifford is also one of the seven nominated venues.

To vote in the competition, go to: http://bit.ly/mPLCci

If you haven’t visited the netmums website previously, you will have to click ‘Choose your location’ from the menu at the top of the page before you can see the list of nominations for South Gloucestershire.
