The autumn has got off to a busy start for local community choir Stokes Singers, writes Sue Callow, publicity officer.

We’ve been pleased to welcome new members to our Thursday rehearsals and plans for our next performances are well under way.

If you love to sing and would like to join the choir, autumn is a great time to start something new. There is room for more singers in all sections and men or ladies with lower voices would be particularly welcome to join the baritones. Musical directors Sian Walters and Philip Lawrence assure you of a warm welcome and the opportunity to try the choir for two rehearsals free of charge to see how you get on. Thursday evening rehearsals are at 7.30pm at Coniston Community Centre, Patchway and Liz, our membership secretary, can give you further information on 014545 614148.

At our weekly rehearsals, we’re preparing for our ‘Voices for Hospices’ concert which will raise funds for our local St Peter’s Hospice. We are delighted to be joining forces with Yate based Apollo Wind Band, under the direction of David Knight, to present an entertaining evening of song and music to suit all tastes. Anne King, chair of Stokes Singers, commented:

“So many of us have experienced, through family, friends and work colleagues, the amazing care given by our local hospice. This concert is a great way of supporting St Peter’s to continue their work.”

‘Voices for Hospices’ will be at Holy Trinity Church, Broad Croft, Bradley Stoke, BS32 0BD at 7.30pm on Saturday 14th October. Advance tickets will be available from Liz on 01454 614148 or from members of Stokes Singers or Apollo Wind Band. Please buy your ticket early to make sure of your seat.

Stokes Singers need more men!

Posted on Friday 13th February 2015 at 9:14 am by SH (Editor)

Stoke Singers perform at St George's, Bristol.

Local community choir Stokes Singers are looking for male singers to boost their bass/tenor/baritone section.

“We need additional male singers to join our staunch men’s team and ‘pump up the volume’ of our performances. There are also spaces for a few more altos, but we currently have a full complement of sopranos.”

“We welcome singers of all levels, including beginners, so if you’re a bit nervous, don’t worry because you learn as a group to get the right notes when we rehearse.”

The choir, at present 35 strong, meets at 7.30pm every Thursday at Coniston Community Centre, Patchway. There are no auditions and the only requirement is the ability to sing in tune. Rehearsals are relaxed and great fun with a mid-session break for tea and chat.

Stokes Singers hold two concerts each year, singing popular songs of all kinds, raising funds for various charities, as well as performing at other events.

Singing is a great way to relax and meet people. So, after a long hard days at work, singing will help take your mind off all the politics, deadlines and problems that seem to take over your life!

It’s also great being able to invite your friends and family to concerts – nothing beats the feeling at the end of the concert though when the baton goes down and the audience erupts in applause. It’s a great sense of achievement and one of the best feelings you’ll ever have.

Choir membership is only £2.75 per week, but the first two weeks are free, so if you would like to come along to give it a try please call Liz on 01454 614148 or make contact via the website: www.stokessingers.org.uk

Stokes Singers invite public to Festival rehearsal

Posted on Wednesday 10th October 2012 at 10:20 am by SH (Editor)

The Stokes Singers perform at the Colston Hall, Bristol in October 2011.

A local community choir is inviting members of the public to attend a rehearsal evening in Stoke Lodge, a day before the group performs at a prestigious event at Bristol’s Colston Hall.

The Stokes Singers, a community choir set up for Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford and the surrounding “Stokes” area, are taking part in Bristol’s Festival of Song, which runs from 12th to 21st October. As part of the Festival, the group is asking members of the community to come along to a rehearsal evening (free entry) on Thursday 18th October at Amberley Road Baptist Church, Stoke Lodge at 8pm. Visitors will be able to sing or watch as well as enjoy some cake and tea or coffee.

The following day (Friday 19th October), the choir will be performing at a ‘Voices in the Hall’ event in the foyer of Bristol’s Colston Hall (also free).

Looking ahead, The Stokes Singers’ annual Christmas Concert will be held at Christ the King, Bradley Stoke on Saturday 15th December, starting at 7.30pm.

The Festival of Song arose in 2009 as a wish to highlight and celebrate Bristol’s growing vocal community. With such a diversity of individual singers, small groups, large community choirs and ensembles singing regularly across a range of genres, the opportunity to celebrate this shared love of singing clearly needed to be addressed.

The Festival of Song 2012 continues to showcase a rich diversity of genres, styles, repertoires and workshop activities through its seven strands, which are:

  • Ticketed Performances in some of Bristol’s best venues
  • Free Lunchtime Concerts in city centre churches
  • Free early evening performances in Colston Hall Foyer
  • Workshops and SoundBoards
  • Bristol Song Trail
  • Song Raids around the city centre & harbourside
  • SongLines Educational Programme running throughout the year
