Happy Days Nursery in Bradley Stoke took it upon themselves to raise money for BBC Children in Need by conducting their very own version of the ‘Rickshaw Challenge’, emulating the official BBC ride made by six young people who cycled from Calais to Salford, a distance of 423 miles.

Between Monday 12th and Friday 16th November, Happy Days Nursery hosted a stationary exercise bike in their reception area to help them ‘cycle’ the equivalent of 489 miles, representing a virtual journey that started at the group’s Swindon nursery and finished at their Falmouth nursery, visiting all 21 of the company’s nurseries along the way.

The miles were clocked up not only by the staff of the local nursery, but also by several parents, and even some of the group’s head office staff who travelled up from Cornwall to support and take part.

Working within the childcare sector, the staff and the management team within the nursery say they are always keen to support any event that will raise money to support children’s wellbeing across the globe. Speaking to the Journal, Jen Kilbride, nursery manager and Stacey Bailey, deputy manager, expressed how thankful they are to everyone who helped complete the challenge.

Through donations in the nursery and via an online Rickshaw Challenge donation page, parents and staff at the Bradley Stoke nursery raised £337 for Children in Need.

Leisure centre spin marathon raises hundreds for Comic Relief

Posted on Friday 15th March 2013 at 7:57 pm by SH (Editor)

Sponsored cycle for Comic Relief at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

Two spin instructors have raised hundreds of pounds for Comic Relief by staging a sponsored cycle in the foyer of Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre today.

Fitness supervisor Jon Booth and gym manager Sam Holmes began the marathon at 6am this morning and planned to continue until 8pm this evening, allowing themselves only the occasional toilet break of a minute or two.

Red Nose Day 2013.

The pair set out to raise £250 but the generosity of the leisure centre’s customers means that as much as £750 could be achieved by the end of the event.

Local businesses have also contributed, with Drive Vauxhall of Patchway leading the way with a donation of £50.

Donations can also be made online, through Jon and Sam’s Red Nose Day ‘Giving Page’.

BBC One Show Rickshaw cheered on by Wheatfield Primary pupils

Posted on Wednesday 14th November 2012 at 10:20 am by SH (Editor)

Pupils from Wheatfield Primary School cheer the rickshaw along Bradley Stoke Way.

Pupils at Bradley Stoke’s Wheatfield Primary School took a break from lessons yesterday afternoon to cheer the BBC One Show’s rickshaw as it passed through the town.

The 2012 Rickshaw Challenge is raising vital funds for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK on an arduous 411-mile journey from Llandudno to London, and is due to arrive at BBC’s Television Centre for The One Show’s BBC Children in Need special on Friday (16th November).

Yesterday’s 55-mile stretch, from Cardiff to Bath, saw the rickshaw visit Chepstow before passing into England over the Old Severn Bridge. After passing through Almondsbury, where it was cheered on by children from the local primary school, the rickshaw arrived at the north end of Bradley Stoke Way shortly before 3pm.

Pupils from Wheatfield Primary School had assembled near Primrose Bridge to give the rickshaw and its entourage a tremendous welcome. Waving flags and posters they gave the convoy a tremendous cheer and the rickshaw and its two accompanying cyclists slowed down to acknowledge the reception.

As the Children in Need support vehicle whisked through a few seconds later, the children broke into a chant of “Pudsey, Pudsey …” before being reluctantly ushered back to their classrooms.

The rickshaw eventually made it to Bath in time for a live broadcast on the BBC’s One Show at 7pm and the switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights.

Greggs lead the way in fundraising

Posted on Saturday 9th June 2012 at 1:28 pm by SH (Editor)

Children in Need fundraising by Greggs, Bradley Stoke, Bristol.

Greggs at the Willow Brook Centre in Bradley Stoke have been confirmed a top company fundraiser for the 2011 Children in Need appeal – raising a fantastic £6,145.

1,500 of the UK’s leading bakery retailer’s outlets took part in the fundraising effort. Greggs in Bradley Stoke came 5th nationally, but were number one in the South West, outperforming over 200 other shops.

Manager Sarah Walken said:

“I’m really proud of the effort my team put into fundraising for this terrific cause. We held tombola, a raffle, we walked around Bristol shaking our buckets, we dressed up in silly costumes and we even took Pudsey on a pub crawl!”

“It was great fun but we never lost sight of why we were doing it and we’re very pleased to have made such a significant contribution to the amazing £1,001,052 raised nationally by Greggs.”

“I’d also like to thank other Greggs managers in the region who were entirely supportive and helped us keep going. We’re already planning our activities for 2012 so watch this space!”
