Widowed mum’s Fashion Week makeover

Makeover model Natalie Welsh on the catwalk at Bristol Fashion Week AW2015.

A Bradley Stoke woman was treated to a luxury makeover and the chance to be a catwalk model for the day just weeks after losing her partner in tragic circumstances.

Natalie Welsh became a widow in August at the age of 35 after Brian, her partner of 14 years, had a heart attack and died in his sleep. Her sister Louise was just one of ten people who nominated her to be a ‘makeover model’ at Bristol Fashion Week, held at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway at the end of September.

Speaking after Natalie had been named as one of the five winners, Louise said: “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a makeover right now. It was a big shock but she has fantastic inner strength and is determined to create a happy life for her eight-year-old daughter, Niamh.”

Natalie said: “I couldn’t believe so many of my friends and family nominated me! It was a total surprise to find out I had won. This year has been the hardest of my life but I’m staying strong for my daughter. She was just as excited about this as I was, and it was lovely to have something to look forward to together.”

Natalie was treated to an exclusive shopping trip with Bristol Fashion Week host, TV stylist Mark Heyes, who helped her select a new look. She also received a complimentary hair makeover with Tomlinson of Clifton, the official hairdresser of Bristol Fashion Week, and a makeup masterclass with Bobbi Brown at John Lewis at The Mall.

For her big day, Natalie wore a “purpley jump suit”, chosen by Mark Heyes, which she said “isn’t the type of thing I would normally wear”.

She described the experience of walking down the catwalk in front of a large and appreciative crowd as “nerve racking but exciting at the same time.”

Natalie says she was moved by the huge amount of warmth shown to her and says she even had strangers coming up to her in The Mall after the show to offer support and good wishes.

Bristol Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway

Posted on Thursday 27th March 2014 at 8:57 pm by Rhian Power

Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.

Bristol Fashion Week (BFW) Spring/Summer 2014 was launched at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway on Wednesday (26th March) and runs until Sunday (30th March).

The show is once again hosted by the fabulous Mark Heyes and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton. The performance lasts for one hour, showcasing all the high street stores in The Mall and styling trends such as pastels, primary colours, and ‘patterns to flatter’ from many stores including River Island, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Next.

Key trends this spring/summer are nautical styles to flatter all body shapes, including stripes teamed with long-lined necklaces, to help elongate the body.

The Body Shop outshone themselves once again with the models’ make up, complementing the hair styled by the artistic team at Tomlinson Hairdressing.

As well as wonderful refreshments and goody bags, all guests receive a book of discount vouchers and competitions.

The hosts, Mark and Andrew, took part in the #nomakeupselfie campaign by putting makeup and wigs on – this has been a big craze this month on social networks, and the stunt raised further money for the cause, which is helping raise awareness of breast cancer.

Also attending the event were representatives of the Bristol Breast Care Centre, whose £500,000 appeal is being supported by Bristol Fashion Week.

Tickets for the remaining shows are still available from £8.95 (order online or purchase from the information desk at The Mall). A highly recommended day out, so why not pop down and treat yourself?

The audience enjoyed an exclusive catwalk show previewing an hour’s worth of this season’s latest fashion, all available to buy from the stores at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.

The show included models of all ages, shapes and sizes representing “real” women. Three gorgeous men also impressed the ladies in the audience as they strutted along the catwalk in their various outfits. The key trend colour for this season is undoubtedly red with animal print and tartan additions. The “little red-dress” is an absolute must for the on-trend dresser this autumn.

The models’ make-up was courtesy of The Body Shop and hair was by Tomlinson of Clifton. A wide range of jewellery and accessories complimented the outfits and provided lots of Christmas wish list ideas for the hopeful ladies in the audience.

Delicious complimentary Marks and Spencer refreshments were available and all ticket holders received a free BFW goody bag full of exciting new products, samples and generous discount vouchers. A beautiful Osprey London handbag was the raffle prize generously donated by John Lewis and won by a very happy twelve-year-old girl!

Eighteen shows are scheduled for the five day event. Tickets start from £8.95 and can be purchased from The Mall’s information desk or online at Keep up to date with all the latest news from Bristol Fashion Week by following @mallcribbs on Twitter.
