BSYFC Under-11 Girls back on form

Bradley Stoke Youth FC.

Bradley Stoke Youth FC (BSYFC) Under-11 Girls saw off AEK Boco Red on a bitterly cold morning in Hanham but the football on show was a real showcase for the Bristol Girls’ League with both sides playing open, attacking football.

The away side took the lead on 15 minutes when a late challenge on Lydia Tang saw them awarded a free kick which Captain Daisy Ackerman converted with a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

Boco Red refused to lie down and continued to commit players forward but Emily Hulbert was in inspired form at the back to clear any danger. Moments later another free kick from Ackerman drew a wonderful save from the home keeper as she tipped the effort just over to deny a second for away side.

Just before the break, a quick counter attack from Boco saw a swift passing move out to the right wing crossed into a waiting Boco attacker but the ball just got caught under her feet and Annabelle Thomas was quickly off her goal line to clear the danger and send Bradley Stoke in 1-0 up at the break.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with both sides playing some really attacking football but it was Bradley Stoke who added their second just four minutes in when Paige Fowler latched onto a loose ball and carried it forward before unleashing a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper at the far post.

Boco still continued to search for a way back into the match and were looking dangerous on the counter attack but the Bradley Stoke defence was holding strong and two goals in the final ten minutes allowed them to run out 4-0 winners. The first was the turn of Sophie Molyneux who latched onto a rebound after Olivia Hood’s initial shot hit the post. Then, in the final minutes, Zoe Jones broke from midfield skipping past two defenders and slotting home from the edge of the box.

Next weekend sees the two sides take each other on once more in the reverse fixture.

Unfortunately, the older U12 girls were not able to take three points, losing out in the dying minutes of their game against Hutton Juniors.

Rugby: North Bristol, St Mary’s and Aretians

All three local rugby teams travelled to the same venue at the weekend to play games against one another on Sunday morning. St Mary’s Rugby Minis section and Aretians Rugby Cubs travelled to North Bristol Rugby Club to play games against their younger age groups.

  • Under 8s: North Bristol 49-33 St Mary’s
  • Under 9s: North Bristol 80-35 St Mary’s
  • Under 10s: North Bristol 100-15 St Mary’s/Aretians
  • Under 11s: North Bristol 54-19 St Mary’s

[North Bristol scorers: Sam C (3), Dan C(1), Emry H(1), Finley O(1), Harry H(1), Josh G(1) – Angus F (7 conversions)]

On new pitches that have not long opened at North Bristol’s ground, there were many matches to keep an eye on, especially with the Under-16 age group beating Corsham in stylish fashion as well.

As younger age groups are becoming more popular for youth rugby, there were lots of games and drills happening for the younger people who look for a future in the sport.

Full games of rugby broken down for the younger children, this did not stop the quality of rugby being played. All in all a good day for all involved.
