Coldharbour Lane, Stoke Gifford

Cllr Steve Reade (left) and engineers discuss the scheme to replace 80 metres of damaged drainage pipe, 3 metres below the road surface.

Work to improve flood resilience at Coldharbour Lane will start on Monday 22nd August 2022.

The work will replace the highway drainage pipe that runs from the A4174 Ring Road and under Coldharbour Lane. About 80m of defective pipe needs to be replaced by workers tunnelling under the road.

It is a complex piece of work, which will be completed in phases along the road and is expected to take a total of about four months.

To minimise traffic disruption, Coldharbour Lane will remain open but parts of the road’s southbound carriageway, from the direction of the A4174 Ring Road towards UWE, will be closed during both phases.

The northbound carriageway of Coldharbour Lane and the A4174 Ring Road will not be affected and will not have any closures.

Lane 2 of the southbound dual carriageway will be closed for the majority of the time so that the crew can carry out the tunnelling work. Lane 1 southbound will mainly remain open to traffic.

However, the crew will have to switch lanes for a short period of time. This will mean lane 1 southbound will be closed and lane 2 southbound will be used for traffic.

The old Filton Road, from Coldharbour Lane to Frenchay, will also need to be closed to traffic for a period of about five days. The date is yet to be confirmed, but will likely be in the first week of work.

Work is expected to continue at this site until 19th December 2022, but this is subject to weather conditions.

A38 Gloucester Road North, Filton

Plans are in place to close a section of the southbound (Bristol bound) carriageway of Gloucester Road North to rebuild a retaining wall. The road will be closed overnight from its junction with Hayes Way to its junction with Filton Roundabout for a period of three days. The closure will take place from 8pm to 6am from Friday 14th January 2022.

Motorists are advised to follow the signed diversion. The alternative route will be A38 Gloucester Road, Bradley Stoke Way, Great Stoke Way, Rosedown Avenue (a.k.a. Stoke Gifford By-Pass), A4174 Filton Road, A4174 Station Road, and A4174 Link Road.

One lane (of two) on the southbound carriageway of Gloucester Road North will then remain closed for a period of up to 12 weeks.

The footpath alongside the southbound carriageway will also be closed and pedestrians will be diverted alongside the northbound carriageway via the existing signal controlled crossings.

The repair work will include demolishing the retaining wall, which has been leaning and getting progressively worse, then a new reinforced concrete retaining wall will be built in its place.

These works were originally scheduled for the summer of 2021 but were delayed so they did not clash with other works in the area.

For further information, see the following posts on the South Gloucestershire Council StreetCare Facebook page:

UPDATE (22nd July 2022): “Work to repair the retaining wall along the A38 at Filton is ongoing and our team is currently installing the stone facing onto the wall. This work is expected to complete by the end of the summer. The footway remains closed along this stretch of the A38 while the work continues. Both southbound lanes of the A38 are open to traffic at peak times.”

UPDATE (6th April 2022): “The large number of utilities (gas, water, electricity, telecommunications) in the footway in front of the wall have made the job more complex. It means a lane on the southbound carriageway of Gloucester Road North will remain closed until work is completed. The footpath alongside the southbound carriageway will also be closed and pedestrians will be diverted alongside the northbound carriageway via the existing signal controlled crossings.”

LATEST (4th March 2022): “Works now delayed because of access to private land.”

UPDATE (23rd February 2022): “We are still on schedule to complete the rebuilding of the wall and stabilisation works by May.”

Preparatory work has been ongoing since February as part of a £3.2 million replacement project, and a new bridge footbridge and fittings will be installed between Saturday 25th June and Monday 4th July to enable access between the southbound and northbound areas of the services.

Long Down Avenue, Cheswick Village

Long Down Avenue in Cheswick Village will be closed for major resurfacing works for one week from Wednesday 1st June.

A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said:

“The works will involve the planning off of the existing surface of the carriageway and laying a new surface. These are essential works as part of the council’s resurfacing programme.”

“The work will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am and these works are expected to create a significant amount of noise. We thank residents for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Alternative routes will be signposted whilst the works take place.

Gipsy Patch Lane, Little Stoke

To enable Gipsy Patch Lane to be reopened to two-way traffic, resurfacing work will need to take place over the Easter period. From 8pm on Friday 8th April until 6am on Monday 25th April 2022, Gipsy Patch Lane will be closed to all traffic between its junction with Little Stoke Lane and the entrance to Pegasus Park.

During the resurfacing work all side road junctions along Gipsy Patch Lane that fall within the closure will also need to be closed to traffic. This includes the junctions for Station Road, Gifford Crescent, the service roads, Smithcourt Drive and Bush Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the shared use path along Gipsy Patch Lane and access side junctions.

There will be signed diversion routes in place throughout the closure.

Gipsy Patch Lane, Little Stoke

A one-way (westbound only) scheme for motor vehicles is operating along Gipsy Patch Lane between the Station Road junction, east of the railway bridge, and the Rolls-Royce mini-roundabout, west of the railway bridge.

The junctions for Gifford Crescent, Station Road and the [Gipsy Patch Lane, north side] service road have been reopened to traffic. Vehicles are able to turn left and right out of these junctions.

West of the bridge, access to Pegasus Park is ‘right-in’ and ‘right-out’ only and the junction with Titan Road is closed.

Cyclists and pedestrians are able to use the new shared use path under the railway bridge (in both directions).

South Gloucestershire Council says the one-way system is necessary to “allow safe and efficient working” during the construction of new bus lanes along Gipsy Patch Lane, on either side of the bridge. It will also permit Network Rail’s contractor Alun Griffiths to install the redesigned pumping equipment under the road surface on the south side of the carriageway beneath the bridge.

  • A full (two-way) reopening of Gipsy Patch Lane is scheduled for [Q4 2022; end of September 2022] Monday 25th April 2022.

Overnight road closures

South Gloucestershire Council has announced three additional overnight full closures of Gipsy Patch Lane that are needed in preparation of the resurfacing work taking place over Easter (see Upcoming roadworks section below).

Gipsy Patch Lane will also need to be closed between its junction with the A38 and the entrance to Pegasus Park on Thursday 7th April 2022, from 8pm to 6am.

All side road junctions along Gipsy Patch Lane that fall within the closures will also need to be closed to traffic. This includes the junctions for Titan Road, Taurus Road, Station Road, Gifford Crescent, the service roads, Smithcourt Drive and Bush Avenue.

Signed diversion routes will be in place during the overnight closures.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the shared-use path along Gipsy Patch Lane and access the side junctions.

Gipsy Patch Lane will be fully closed to traffic, between the service road junction, east of the railway bridge, and the Rolls Royce Gate 5, west of the railway bridge, between 8pm Saturday 29th January 2022 and 8pm Sunday 30th January 2022.

This closure is needed to enable South Gloucestershire Council’s Streetcare team to make changes to the temporary road layout and reopen some of the residential side-road junctions following substantial completion of certain phases of the works. Other works east and west of bridge will continue.

During the closure, the westbound one-way system will not be in operation and those needing to travel by car between Stoke Gifford and the Filton/Patchway area will need to use the diversion route via Winterbourne Road, Bradley Stoke Way and the A38, or vice versa. For those requiring access to Pegasus Park this will be via Gipsy Patch Lane west of the railway bridge where portable traffic signals will be in operation.

Pedestrian and cycling access will be maintained via the new shared use path.
